I read not long ago that one of the reasons for the blowout election of 1972 was that the McGovernites at the convention angered mainstream Democratic party regulars (including Jimmy Carter) so much that the party refused to give McGovern any kind of assistance with his campaign. I was in high school in 1972 so I remember the election well. Whatever nonsense the McGovern supporters brought into the Democratic party, let's not forget the the Vietnam War still loomed large and McGovern's supporters wanted it to end. They were right about that.
