The tug of war between state and federal rights doesn't always equate to a state better representing the individual because it's "closer to home." Issues of sanctuary cities, for example, remind us that such state and local choices can have a meaningful and sometimes negative impact on all Americans, not just the communities who enact such policies.

The tides of favor for nation over state, or vice versa, will naturally shift over time. Writing as a Californian, I currently have more trust in decisions coming out of DC than I've had in a very long while—and I was a lifelong Democrat before coronavirus hysteria. Decisions out of Sacramento have been so skewed toward crazy in recent years, you can call me skeptical that any more than a few are based in common sense.
